I'm a doctoral student in the College of Business, Law and Social Sciences at the University of Derby, exploring the intersection of human dignity and leadership theory. With more than 30 years of professonal experience with technology, consulting, and nonprofit organizations, I have always been intrigued by the dynamics of leadership. I have been particularly interested in the role of leadership in advancing the state of human flourishing.
The idea of human dignity is rooted in ancient traditions, from the Bible and Greek philosophy to the Enlightenment and modern social theory. Today, academic work on human dignity is primarily found in legal and constitutional studies, bioethics, and healthcare. In the business domain, a few researchers have explored human dignity as a basis for workers rights and, in turn, unionization. I hope to extend the conversation of human dignity to the theory and practice of leadership.
